A WOMAN is facing attempted trafficking and child abuse charges for allegedly pimping her 15-year-old daughter to a 65-year-old Japanese national through a dating website.

Rina (real name withheld) and Masahiro Shinoda were charged before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office yesterday afternoon with attempted trafficking and violation of the Republic Act (RA) 7610, or the Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

During the inquest proceeding conducted by Assistant City Prosecutor Noel Cellona, the two opted not to avail themselves of a preliminary investigation.

The complaints, as a result, will be endorsed to court for trial. The suspects may post bail for both cases.

Rina denied she pimped her daughter, saying Shinoda just wanted to help Amie with her studies.

Nothing happened

“Nothing happened between him and my daughter,” said Rina in Cebuano.

Rina and Shinoda were arrested by port police at Pier One in Cebu City last Friday morning when her daughter Amie (not her real name) and the foreigner were leaving for Bohol.

An Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) member noticed the two and asked for Amie’s age and how she is related to Shinoda.

When Amie answered that she’s 16 years old and that Shinoda is her uncle, IACAT member Dunn Labata became suspicious and held them, before referring them to the port police.

Before Shinoda and Rina were arrested, Rina allegedly wrote on the Filipina Heart dating site last month that Amie had turned 19 last January, said Senior Insp. Evan Epe of the Cebu Port Security Division.

‘Guide needed’

Shinoda allegedly introduced himself as a 78-year-old man who suffered from a stroke 12 years ago and needed a guide in his tour in the Philippines.

Shinoda and Amie conversed online and also met in person in Cebu City.

“Sometime in June 2014, Shinoda came to Cebu and for the first time, they (Shinoda and Rina) met at (his) hotel room together with (Rina),” the port police’s report read.

Shinoda also reportedly told Rina to call her other children so they can go shopping.

He also stayed at Rina’s house for three hours; that was when he learned of Amie’s real age.

But Shinoda reportedly said he didn’t mind and told Rina he only wanted to sponsor Amie’s schooling.

There were times also that Amie reportedly spent the night at the hotel where Shinoda was billeted but in a separate room. The suspect returned to Japan and came back to Cebu for the second time last July 23.

Around P30,000 was given by the Japanese to Amie, said Epe.
