THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 is joining other law enforcement agencies in the crackdown on a new drug called "Green Apple," which is reportedly sold to students and party-goers.

Atty. Max Salvador, NBI 7 director, told reporters yesterday that his office received reports about the sale of the drug here in Cebu City.

But the shipment of Green Apple stopped after NBI 7 raided stores that sell banned drugs and slimming pills.

He said the selling of drugs that are not certified by the Food and Drugs Administration is illegal.

Authorities said Green Apple is supposedly a substitution for party drugs Ecstasy and Fly High. One of its side effects is increased heart rate.

Users reportedly take the drug to stay alert and it is said to be a performance enhancer, ANC reported in its website.

Dealers get their supply of Green Apple online and they allegedly arrange for their buyers to pick up the drugs in designated places in campus. The drugs are often hidden under chairs or tables.

The NBI in Manila recently sought the help of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for possible solutions to address the new drug problem.

Recent arrests

Several Green Apple dealers have been arrested in buy-bust operations.

The Dangerous Drugs Board said they still need to have Green Apple reclassified as an illegal drug. The drug is illegal in the US and in Europe.

For Salvador, he said they do not want the drug to spread in Cebu City and other parts of Central Visayas.

"Illegal drugs are a menace to the community," he said. KAL
