JOSE Hinagdanan Jr., wants to support himself by earning his own money despite his disability.

So he showed up at the job fair organized by the Provincial Social Welfare Office (PSWO) for persons with disabilities (PWDs) at the Ayala Center Cebu.

“This is my only chance to be hired so I gambled on that chance,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Hinagdanan, who applied at three call centers, said he has had to rely on his family for the last 48 years.

“When I was young my parents took good care of me but now that they passed away my sister is on taking the responsibility,” he said.
PWD Month

Hinagdanan suffers from cerebral palsy and has difficulty walking. His crutches have been his constant companions.

Hinagdanan was accompanied yesterday by his younger sister Grace Cueto.
“I have always been proud of him, with that situation he still managed to help me in the house. He is a good worker,” Cueto said.

She said he helped with the cooking, the dishes and the laundry.

Both siblings live in Barangay Cabangcalan, Mandaue City.

Hinagdanan worked as a radio man for a year at the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the late 2000s.

Rose Jao, PSWDO officer-in-charge, said the job fair is part of the month-long celebration of PWD Month.

“This is to empower, guide and help them because as a social welfare office we need to value also their welfare,” Jao told Sun.Star Cebu.
More than 10 companies joined the job fair, looking for call center agents, store crew and clerical workers.

PSWDO was hoping for at least 50 PWDs to participate in the activity. As of noon yesterday, 30 had showed up.
