REP. Raul Del Mar (Cebu City, north) said he will meet Department of Tourism (DOT) Sec. Ramon Jimenez Jr. to discuss the transfer of the 40-foot brass statue of Lapulapu from the Rizal Park in Manila to Lapu-Lapu City.

“I made representation with DOT Sec. Jimenez that we discuss this further. I told him that I am against removing the statue of Lapu-Lapu there,” Del Mar said.

Earlier, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza requested the DOT secretary to transfer the statue from Luneta to Cebu.

Radaza said that although she respects del Mar’s statement, she will stand firm in her decision, saying the transfer is part of the city’s preparation for the 500th year celebration of Lapu-Lapu’s victory against the Spaniards.

Radaza said her request was granted by Jimenez.

“I’m in favor of whatever additional statue there will be in Lapu-Lapu City, but I’m also in favor of keeping that one there in Rizal Park,” del Mar said.

Del Mar and former congresswoman Nerissa Soon-Ruiz were the ones who urged former president Gloria Arroyo to place the statue in Rizal Park through a resolution.

“Ang akong posisyon is still the same. Maayo man ni iyang plano og magbutang og statue ni Lapulapu didto sa Punta Engaño. Pero maayo unta dili kadto maoy ibalhin (Radaza’s plan to put a Lapu-Lapu statue in Punta Engaño is good. But it should not be the one in Rizal Park),” he said.

Del Mar will meet Jimenez probably within the week, or depending on when the official is available.

Before, the National Historical Institute opposed the plan of placing the statue in Luneta, saying the park is only for the heroes who died there.

It was the idea of former DOT secretary Dick Gordon to place the giant statue of Lapu-Lapu in Luneta.
