JVR buys bus so residents need not hitchhike at SRP-A A +A

THE Talisay City Government has been giving free bus rides to residents who commute to Cebu City every day.
Called the “JVR Bus Libreng Sakay Alang sa mga Talisaynon,” the service is available from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The bus, which began operations about a month ago, is named after Mayor Johnny de los Reyes’s nickname, JVR.
Pick-up point is at Talisay City Hall in Barangay Lawaan 2 and drop-off is at the Plaza Independencia in Cebu City. The bus will ply the Cebu South Coastal Road passing through the South Road Properties (SRP).
The bus can carry up to 70 passengers.
De los Reyes told Sun.Star Cebu that he decided to give a free bus service after seeing many Talisay residents standing along the Cebu South Coastal Road trying to hitch a ride to Cebu City.
The mayor said he received a report that one resident died after falling off a 10-wheeler truck whose driver gave him a free ride to Cebu City.
“Naglatay sad sila sa piligro bisan makasakay sila (They put their lives at risk when they hitch a ride),” he said.
De los Reyes said he used his money to buy the bus for P1.4 million. He said he will also use personal funds to buy fuel for the bus.
To be able to recoup his money, de los Reyes said he rents out the bus during weekends.
He said he is planning to buy another bus to be able to serve more constituents.
