Don’t abandon teachers, Catholic schools urged

THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippine (CBCP) has asked Catholic school operators and officials to be “creative” once the K to 12 program implements the senior high school system in 2016.

The CBCP was reacting to reports that some private higher education institutions (HEIs) might retrench employees once this happens since this will mean low or zero enrolment in the freshmen level.



CBCP president and Lingayen, Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, in a statement, urged Catholic school administrators not to abandon their teachers and instructors.

“We strongly exhort our school administrators to provide opportunities for the re-tooling and re-training of our instructors and professors in tertiary education to be able to handle subjects in the academic track of senior high school. Our Catholic school teachers and instructors should not be left to their own devices,” Villegas said.

He also urged priests who serve as school directors to help their teachers and instructors “in all charity and solicitude.”

The archbishop appealed to teachers, instructors and professors to not use Catholic schools as a “stepping stone,” while waiting for lucrative offers from higher-paying institutions.


“We exhort graduates of teacher education courses who qualify themselves to teach by passing the requisite licensure examinations not only to be committed to service, but to take heart--and as the private motive for applying with Catholic schools--the command of the Las Supper: To love with such an unconditional love that we can wash each other’s feet,” he said.

Villegas also advised Catholic school administrators to be responsive to the legitimate needs of their employees and faculty.

Meanwhile, Dr. Minella Alarcon of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) urged HEIs to prepare their teachers and instructors to teach general subjects in senior high school by exposing them to experts who can interpret their lessons properly.


Alarcon, who is one of Ched’s commissioners, was in Cebu earlier this week to conduct a three-day seminar on teaching Physics in the senior high school level.

“We are no longer bound by the ‘chalk and board’ approach in teaching. Our teachers are now required to engage their students by conducting activities and doing experiments,” she said.

But even with the additional training and seminars, teachers will still face different challenges, such as keeping students interested in the subjects and teaching them to apply these subjects in real-life situations, Alarcon said.
