ALCANTARA Mayor Fredo Cañete died of a heart attack yesterday morning in a private hospital. He was 69.
Lea Hernandez, his secretary, said Cañete asked to be brought to the hospital Friday night after experiencing discomfort. He stayed at the intensive care unit until his death.
Prior to his last hospitalization, Cañete had been confined twice after he learning that he had a heart problem.
Hernandez described her boss as a simple and good person who had a lot of plans for the development of the town. He distributed budgets to nine districts for a multipurpose building and has started asphalting some roads. He also had plans about providing access to electricity and potable water in some parts of the town.
“He won because the people chose him. He is a very understanding and approachable person. He would even find ways to help his constituents’ problems,” she said.
Cañete started his career in public service as a councilor in 2004. After completing three terms, he ran as mayor last year as an independent candidate.
Vice Mayor Beatriz Caburnay, in a separate interview, said that the Municipal Government has not yet decided on when she will take over as mayor.
“I don’t know when, but maybe after his burial. For now, I am not taking over his responsibilities yet, no one is taking over yet,” she said.
Family and friends may visit Cañete’s wake at his residence on B. Rodriquez St. for two to three days before his remains will be brought to Alcantara, Hernandez said. (Rosedelyn S. Catalan, USJ-R Masscom Intern)
