REPRESENTATIVE Gabriel Luis Quisumbing (Cebu, sixth district) welcomed the approval of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project for Cebu by President Benigno Aquino III, saying an efficient mass transportation system will “give Cebu a further push in its economic and social progress.”

“The sixth district will hugely benefit from this because of our proximity to Cebu City. More importantly, Mandaue City and the municipalities of Consolacion and Cordova are strategic locations for growing industries and businesses,” Quisumbing said in a statement sent to Sun.Star Cebu.

The proposed P10.6-billion BRT project is one of the nine major projects, worth P62.3 billion combined, that Aquino and the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) approved last Thursday.

The project was first endorsed to the Neda board two years ago.

“An efficient mass transportation system will facilitate carriage of people, goods and services to improve overall commerce in our district, adjoining areas and the entire province of Cebu,” Quisumbing said.

The BRT, whose construction is expected to take two years, will cover 16 kms. and will be built in two phases.

With 33 stations and 176 buses, the BRT is expected to serve 330,000 passengers per day.

The Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) hopes to bid out the project within the year.

World Bank

The Agence Francaise de Development and the World Bank, through the Clean Technology Fund, will fund the project.

“Cebu is more than ready for the BRT,” said Quisumbing. “A convenient, reliable and efficient BRT will give Cebu a further push in its economic and social progress.” (RSB)
