A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy died after he was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a barangay captain last Wednesday in Barangay Olivo, Tabuelan, Cebu.
Kinawahan, San Remigio Barangay Captain Susan Collamat was heading home, driving his black Mitsubishi Montero around 10 a.m. when John Ray Matedios, 4, crossed the street.
Tabuelan Police Chief Alfredo Kuhay said Matedios was beckoned by his playmate who was on the other side of the road.
“The incident happened so abruptly that the driver wasn’t able to brake on time,” Kuhay told Sun.Star Cebu.
Matedios was rushed to the Felipe Verallo Memorial District Hospital in Bogo City on board Collamat’s vehicle, but he didn’t make it alive due to severe head injuries, said Kuhay.
Before the accident, the victim was with his mother Lilibeth, who attended a barangay-related affair held at Sitio Cansimon.
Collamat surrendered to the police but Kuhay said the victim’s family agreed not to file a case against the barangay captain as long as he will provide financial assistance to the family.
Meanwhile, one of the nine Japanese nationals who figured in a road accident in arangay Gawi, Oslob last Tuesday died in the hospital.
Insp. Christopher Castro, head of Oslob Police Station, said Hiromi Ichimura died at the South General Hospital in the City of Naga.
Ichimura, together with other Japanese tourists, were heading to Oslob for whale shark watching when the Toyota Hi-Ace van they were riding hit a culvert.
Mechanical failure was eyed as cause of the accident after driver Guillerma Hella told police the steering wheel malfunctioned.
Castro said the victims were transferred to a private hospital in Cebu City, where Ryosuke Toi is still in a serious condition.
“Na-grabihan sad ni siya kay naa man sa front seat naglingkod (He was gravely injured because he was seated in the front),” Castrol told Sun.Star Cebu, adding that Toi served as the group’s tour guide.
Police filed a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and physical injuries against Hella. DSM
