FR. GONZALO Candado has “mixed feelings” about his new obligation.
“We can’t deny that there is joy in accepting the priesthood, but I also have fears of what might come in the future. But this is a gift from the Lord and this gift should be accepted wholeheartedly,” Candado said.
He and six other seminarians--William Alcalde, Harvey Argoncillo, Pepito Batomalaque, Marcial Mangubat, Marco Antonietti and Leodigario Zenarosa--were ordained to the priesthood by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral yesterday morning.
Palma also appointed four new deacons. They are Galicano Belongilot, Jubileo Gacho, Joselito Marcial and Jesus Resurrection Segovia. They’re from the Society of the Angel of Peace in Barangay Cansojong in Talisay City, Cebu.
In his homily, Palma urged the newly ordained priests and deacons to never forget the obligations and vows that they have made before God.
“We should thank God that He is the source of goodness. Let us remember that it is God who chose us and we should follow,” Palma said.
He also urged them to be good shepherds to their respective flocks and to “serve and not to be served.”
“Let us not serve for money but for the sake of service and as a gratitude to the Lord,” he said.
Palma also urged them to recognize the role of the laity once they start serving their respective parishes.
“We serve together with other servers. While the role of priests is important, but the role of the laity should also be recognized,” he said.
Attending the ordination ceremony yesterday were Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu Emilio Bataclan and Dumaguete Archbishop Julito Cortes.
They were also joined by the archdiocese’s more than 300 priests from different parishes.
