CEBU - Nine young women were rescued while a suspected pimp was caught during an entrapment inside a shopping mall in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City last night.

Operatives of the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (RAHTTF) Central Visayas arrested Fugilito Baring, 21, who allegedly facilitated the arrangement between the women and a police decoy who pretended to be looking for sexual partners.

Insp. Sheryl Bautista, the task force’s deputy chief, told Sun.Star Cebu the women were sold for P4,000 each for their sexual services.

Eight of them were believed to be minors, and the police are now checking their documents to verify their ages.

The operation took place past 8 p.m. when Baring, a resident of Barangay Mambaling, and the police decoy decided to meet in a mall to deliver the girls.

“He didn’t resist. The women also cooperated. Wala ra naggubot didto (There was no commotion),” Bautista said in a phone interview.

Bautista said they are now questioning Baring on his alleged involvement in prostituting the victims.

During their investigation, she said they learned the man only provided the women if someone asked for his help. He reportedly did not advertise the women online.

The operation was conducted in coordination with Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), International Justice Mission (IJM) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Visayas, which have been in the forefront against this form of modern-day slavery.

The rescued women will be brought to DSWD, where they will undergo debriefing and interview. They will also be medically examined.

A complaint for violating Republic Act (RA) 10364 or the Expanded Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012, a non-bailable offense, is being prepared against Baring. He is temporarily detained in Police Station 2 of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Since the RAHTTF started their operations five years ago, they have saved 582 persons, 62 of whom were minors. Some 105 suspected human traffickers have been arrested.

Their last operation before last night was in February, where they arrested a suspected cyberporn operator during an entrapment inside an upscale hotel in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City. They also rescued a 14-year-old boy who had been allegedly sold by the suspect. (Sun.Star Cebu)
