MEMBERS of Carcar City’s Bantay Dagat were able to rescue a sea turtle that was about to be slaughtered at dawn yesterday.

Edgardo Oca, Carcar City agriculture officer, told Sun.Star Cebu that they found the sea turtle, or pawikan, on the shore of Barangay Tuyom around 3 a.m.

Oca said the sea turtle, which measures 24 inches wide and 33 inches long, was caught by fishermen from Bohol who planned to eat its meat.

Members of the Bantay Dagat allowed the fishermen to leave. And after checking and measuring the sea turtle, they released it to the wild without contacting the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7 and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7.

Oca said they found parasites in the sea turtle’s stomach, but other than that the animal did not display any significant injuries.
