ARRY Gasser, veteran broadcaster and one of the icons of Philippine journalism, passed away yesterday. He was 76.

According to a radio dyLA report, Gasser died at the Quezon City General Hospital at 3 a.m., following a bout with pneumonia that triggered his heart condition.

Gasser’s son Henry said his father was rushed to the hospital Thursday last week after he complained of difficulty breathing.

Henry described his father as an outgoing person, who was the only one in the family who regularly exercised. Gasser played golf in his pastime.

Gasser is survived by his wife, veteran comedienne Flora Gasser, and their two children.

His remains will be brought to the St. Peter’s Chapel in Quezon City.

An idol

In an interview yesterday, ABS-CBN Cebu reporter Jun Rey Nadela described Gasser as an “iconic but down-to-earth” man.

Nadela said he met Gasser in the mid-1990s when the latter was assigned in Cebu to be ABS-CBN TV Patrol’s lead anchor.

Nadela said he always felt proud when Gasser introduced his reports, adding that Gasser always invited him to eat at the latter’s rented house in Basak-Pardo.

He said Gasser never took a cab and preferred to take the jeepney instead.

Nadela remembered Gasser as being silent, with hardly any hint of ego.

“Dili ni siya kibaw masuko o mangisog, bisag kung maguba ang iyang script o iyang balita (He didn’t get angry, even when we messed up his script),” Nadela said.

In the `70s, Gasser anchored Radio Philippines Network’s NewsWatch.

After Martial Law, Gasser worked as the news manager of Radio Veritas before transferring to ABS-CBN to anchor TV Patrol in Cebu.
