THE police have identified the registered owners of the vehicles used by Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) officials Benito Tiamzon and Wilma Austria who were arrested last Saturday in Barangay Zaragosa, Aloguinsan.

The Hyundai Starex van used by Tiamzon and Austria was registered to Rex Villaflor, one of the five persons who were arrested with Tiamzon and Austria.

Villaflor was reportedly the one who arranged for the lease of the house in San Fernando since January 2013 with an agent of Vicky Sabellano, owner of the property.

The Toyota Innova was registered to Darlon Davide Lenares.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 Chief Ritchie Posadas said they are still checking the background of Lenares.

Posadas said they will ask Sabellano for more information on Tiamzon, Austria and the other occupants of the house in Sitio Boloc-Boloc, Barangay Sangat in the southern Cebu town of San Fernando.

Posadas said Sabellano has expressed willingness to help the police investigation.

One of Sabellano’s agents, who asked not to be named, said Villaflor and his partner Nona, who was also among those arrested, claimed to have an online business involving dry goods dealership.

"They were looking for a house with a wide yard as they have an elderly companion who has a knee problem and needs regular walking exercises,” said the agent.

Sabellano’s property in San Fernando has a land area of 2,500 square meters.

Sabellano’s agent said they thought that Villaflor had a legitimate business because they found his profile in Linked-in, an online social networking site.

The agent said the tenants were prompt with their rent payment of P15,000 a month.

Law enforcers did not find guns or explosives in the house occupied by Tiamzon and Austria.

Posadas also said he is not sure if the informant who led authorities to Tiamzon and Austria is from Cebu.

The couple, considered high-ranking officials of the CPP-NPA, are detained in Manila along with Nona C. Castillo of Consolacion town; Jeosi M. Nepa of Lapu-Lapu City; Arlene J. Panea of Mactan, Joel E. Enano of Buhatan, Sorsogon; and Villaflor of Makati

Tiamzon and Austria are facing murder and frustrated murder charges before the Regional Trial Court Branch 21 in Samar, said SPO1 Randy Chavez of the Carcar City Police Station. JTR/OCP
