TALISAY City is one of eight local government units in the country cited by the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) for its tax collection efficiency.
Talisay City Treasurer Emma Macuto told Sun.Star Cebu that she was informed of the award after attending a BLGF conference in Davao City last month.
Tagbilaran City in Bohol and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental were also given the same recognition.
BLGF officials plan to pay a courtesy call to Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes next week to formally inform him of the award.
Macuto attributed their continuous tax collection campaign for the award, saying they are closely working with the city’s 22 barangays to ensure that their collection is always on time.
Macuto said barangay officials have been helpful in collecting taxes from business owners in their respective areas. Also, delinquent business owners are regularly sent demand letters to get them to pay their taxes on time.
Collectors are always on field, visiting business establishments to remind them of their obligations, Macuto added.
In terms of real property taxes, Talisay City was able to collect about P89 million in 2013, exceeding its tax collection target of P76 million, said City Assessor Alma Abellanosa.
Abellanosa said that after exceeding the BLGF’s target for real property taxes, they were able to get P13 million in surplus.
Real property tax collection is at 100 percent efficient as well, Abellanosa added.
Last year, the Talisay City Government was recognized by the BLGF as one of 16 cities in Central Visayas with the best performance in terms of efficiency. It ranked third during fiscal year 2012-2013.
The BLGF rates LGUs based on collection targets and not on the amount collected.
