POLICE are now tracking down one of the suspects responsible for the ambush of a barangay captain and his family in Toledo City late Monday afternoon.

Toledo City Police Chief Michael Anthony Bastes said they were able to identify the suspect based on witnesses’ accounts. He refused to give more details, saying it might jeopardize their investigation.

As of yesterday, Bastes said that Alexander Alqueza, Captain Claudio village chief, is already in stable condition.

The Association of Barangay Councils (ABC)-Cebu Province will assist Alqueza in his medical needs, said its president Celestino Martinez III.

Martinez said they are now working on determining who will get the money. He added that they cannot give specific amount yet as this will be based on Alqueza’s condition.

Alqueza, 68; his common-law wife and Captain Claudio Barangay Councilor Irene Wamelda, 28; and their four-year-old adopted son were on their way home on board their multicab when the suspects ambushed them on the boundary of Barangays Carmen and Dumlog.

Wamelda succumbed to gunshot wounds while the boy escaped unhurt. A neighbor and two students, who were at the back of the vehicle, are safe.

Bastes said he will meet with Alqueza to look into the case further.

“We will find out if he has enemies who could be behind this,” Bastes said, adding that they still could not conclude what could have prompted the attack.

Bastes also said they will check Alqueza’s and Wamelda’s background.
