A LOCAL church official urged the faithful to observe Ash Wednesday with humility and sacrifice.

Msgr. Esteban Binghay said Ash Wednesday, which is being observed today, should serve as an opportunity to better one’s self and understand one’s mortality.

Binghay, who is one the Cebu Archdiocese’s episcopal vicars, said the ashes that are placed on the forehead during Ash Wednesday is a reminder that we are “made from dust and to dust we will return.”

‘All about humility’

He also urged the faithful to use today’s observation as an opportunity to not just abstain from eating three full meals a day, but also to do good work, such as giving alms to the poor.

“Ash Wednesday is about humility. Let us be humble or we shall stumble,” he said.

Ash Wednesday, which is a moveable feast that usually occurs in March or February, marks the first day of the 40-day observance of the Lenten Season.

Binghay said palms used during the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned and turned to ashes, which are then used to mark the foreheads of the faithful.

In Cebu, Archbishop Jose Palma will formally open Lent by holding an Ash Wednesday mass at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral at 5 p. m. today.
