THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) yesterday suspended one of the vessels of Trans Asia Shipping Lines, which failed to sail to Cagayan de Oro the other day.

Marina 7 Legal Officer Jose Cabatingan said the agency suspended the ship safety certificate (SSC) of mv Trans Asia 5, whose auxiliary engine overheated and tripped off.

“The ship will not be cleared to sail,” Cabatingan said.

As of press time, Cabatingan said, Marina still have yet to receive the marine protest of the ship captain of mv Trans Asia 5.

Abner Llenos, Trans Asia Shipping hour manager and designated person ashore, denied reports that the ship ran aground.

He said the automotive voltage regulator of one of the auxiliary engines of mv Trans Asia 5 overheated then shut down.

“(After) about 10 seconds, power was restored. The vessel could have proceeded to its destination but the master decided to go back to Cebu port for inspection by an expert repair team with (appropriate) equipment,” Llenos said.

Commander Rodolfo Villajuan, Cebu Coast Guard Station chief, told Sun.Star Cebu that mv Trans Asia 5 had 580 passengers when the incident happened.

Villajuan said that all the passengers were transferred to mv Trans Asia 9, which departed Cebu port at 8 last night.

According to records at the Philippine Coast Guard, the ship had to drop anchor in the vicinity of the South Road Properties when its one of its auxiliary engines shut down.

When the third engine was turned on, the crew tried to pull the anchor chain but the wind lass was weak and defective so they had to cut the chain.

“That was the time the Coast Guard ordered them to go back to Pier 5 because the vessel was not anymore seaworthy,” Villajuan said. EOB
