AN OFFICIAL from Camp Crame wants the investigation on the killing of lawyer Noel Archival monitored and considered a priority.

Directorate for Investigative and Detection Management head Chief Supt. Agustus Marquez said the monitoring should be done through Task Force Usig, an investigating unit focusing on the resolution of cases involving the harassment and killing of journalists and activists.

While he gave directions to closely monitor the investigation, Marquez, in his visit to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7, said he cannot impose a deadline for the solution of the case because solving the crime may have to depend on the evidences presented.

In the monthly Talakayan sa Isyung Police forum held yesterday, the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) said they are still gathering more information that may shed light on Archival’s killing.

Supt. Glen Ares told the media that the messages in Archival’s cellular phone have been retrieved and are now being studied by the police.

Based on the records of the text messages, Archival did not receive death threats. The extracted text messages, however, proved useful to police because it coincided with the direction the investigation is going.

Meanwhile, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 Director Antonio Pagatpat said the purpose of their investigation on the attack is to determine the mastermind.

He said they will start from scratch and trace Archival’s itinerary in Dumaguete City before the ambush in Barangay Coro last Feb. 18.

“We would like to solve this crime with the help of the community,” said Pagatpat, a lawyer.

He assigned a team led by supervising agents Rennan Oliva and Jose Ermie Monsanto to investigate the case after Archival’s brother, Cebu City Councilor Nelson Archival, sent a letter to his office last Tuesday requesting a parallel investigation last Tuesday.

Pagatpat also said they will conduct a case conference with the special task group if necessary.

It has been a week since Archival, along with three others were ambushed in Barangay Coro, Dalaguete. Archival, his aide Candido Miñoza, and driver Alejandro Jayme were killed.

The lawyer’s other aide, Paulo Cortes, survived and is recuperating in the hospital.
