Capitol urges public to join Edsa celebration-A A +A

THE Cebu Provincial Government urged Cebuanos to witness the 28th anniversary of Edsa People Power at the Capitol tomorrow.
In Cebu City, Vice Mayor Edgar Labella encouraged all 5,000 employees of the city hall to join the celebration.
President Benigno Aquino III and his cabinet secretaries will be in Cebu to attend the event.
Aquino will then go to Bantayan Island to check the situation of the residents affected by typhoon Yolanda last Nov. 8.
Cebu Provincial Information Officer Ethel Natera said the Capitol encouraged the public to wear yellow shirts for the Edsa People Power.
In a separate interview, Labella said the Cebu City Government expressed full support for the Edsa People Power anniversary.
Labella said he will make the attendance of the city hall employees in the event mandatory, although there will be no punishment for those who cannot attend considering the short notice and there is no office work today.
He also asked the officials of the 80 barangays of Cebu City to encourage their constituents to witness the event.
Natera said the audience may position along Osmeña Blvd., Cebu City for big screens will be provided so that they can see the “Salubungan” reenactment.
Salubungan was when the ordinary citizens and religious sector members joined and marched along Efipanio de los Santos Ave. (Edsa) and met the military personnel, stopped their tanks and convinced them to join them to end the dictatorship of Marcos.
Natera advised Cebuanos to take note of the road closure starting today.
The road in front of the Capitol will be closed by 12 noon today for the preparations of the celebration tomorrow.
“The public can wear yellow shirts. It is historic for Cebu to host the celebration in the 28 years from Edsa even in 1986,” Natera said in a text message.
Earlier, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director General Jose Mari Oqui?ena appealed for respect for the sacredness of the celebration for it is not a political celebration but reminiscing how the Filipinos earned the democracy from the Marcos regime.
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III will meet the production team, Capitol department heads, PIA officials, members of the Presidential Security Group, police, military and other officials concerned to finalize the preparation at the Capitol by 10 AM today.
According to Supt. Renato Malazarte, deputy provincial director for operations of Cebu Provincial Police Office, there will be 800 military personnel in addition to the policemen who will be assigned in the Capitol grounds.
Outside the Capitol building will be supervised by the police personnel from the Cebu City Police Office, said Malazarte.
