TWO men died yesterday afternoon while trying to clean a clogged drainage that caused flooding on Colis St., the road next to the old Tabunok market in Talisay City.

Brendon Cabanes, 26, and his cousin Romeo, 27, died from inhaling the poisonous fumes in the sewer. Their companions—Winston Campo, 26, and Lemuel Macaraya, 30—had to be brought to the hospital because they nearly suffocated while trying to rescue Cabanes and Romeo.

The 10-feet-deep sewer is clogged with garbage and mud. The problem, which persisted for over a month, has been the subject of complaints from business owners and residents.

Talisay City Councilor Danny Caballero said the four men were subcontracted by the City to clean the sewer.

Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes plans to give assistance to the workers and their families.

Vince Monterde, Talisay City public information officer, told reporters yesterday that de los Reyes ordered the City Government to provide free burial services for Cabanes and his cousin.

The city mayor also plans to offer a job to Cabanes’ wife after finding out that he was the breadwinner in the family.
