A MAN was arrested after he allegedly stabbed dead his girlfriend’s cousin in Barangay Duljo Fatima, Cebu City yesterday morning.

Suspect Joseph Bryan Cabase, 18, also suffered gunshot wounds in his stomach after he was allegedly shot by the victim’s brother Butch Aranses, 38, after the incident.

According to the investigation of the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), Cabase and victim Fritz Aranses, 35, were reportedly arguing outside Fritz’s house around 7 a.m.

Fritz reportedly disapproved of Cabase’s relationship with his 17-year-old cousin Beverly (real name withheld for being a minor), who lives in the victim’s house.

Minutes later, Fritz and Cabase got into a brawl, only to be pacified by neighbors.

Then Fritz went into his house to take a bath but Cabase allegedly followed him and stabbed him several times.

Fritz was stabbed in the neck, ear and back. He was rushed to the Miller Hospital, but he later died.

His family asked Beverly to contact Cabase an hour after the incident.

She reportedly texted Cabase, who agreed to meet her in front of a school in Barangay San Nicolas.

When Cabase arrived, he was surprised to see the victim’s neighbor and relatives.

Cabase was reportedly told to return to the victim’s house.

On the way there, the victim’s neighbors beat him up. A gunshot rang out and Cabase was hit.

He was taken to the hospital.

Further investigation revealed that witnesses saw Butch fire the shot.

In an interview, Butch denied the accusation.

No excuse

Butch, along with Fritz’s family, went to the Homicide Section to be interviewed by the investigators about Fritz’s death, but he was surprised when police arrested him.

“Niari ko para sa kamatayon sa akong igsuon, ila man nuon ko gidakop. Ako pay namatyan ako pay gidakop (I came here because my brother’s dead, and they end up arresting me. I’m the one who lost a brother and they’re locking me up),” Butch said.

SPO4 Rey Cuyos said they arrested Butch after a witness tagged him as the gunman.

“Bisan nakasala si Cabase niya, dili rason ang pagpusil kay amo pud siya (Butch) dakpon (Even though Cabase killed his brother should not be an excuse so we had to arrest him),” Cuyos said.

Beverly, in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, said she is willing to testify against her boyfriend.

She said she saw Cabase stab her cousin, but she said she was not aware that Butch had shot him.

Police are preparing charges against Butch and Cabase, who are detained in the CCPO stockade.
