A WEATHER specialist said there are advantages for schools who will implement the new academic calendar.

Alfredo Quiblat of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the schools that choose to implement the new academic calendar will enjoy classes free from rains.

The University of the Philippines, including its Cebu campus, and the Ateneo de Manila University earlier announced the implementation of their new academic calendar for 2014-2015.

According to the new academic calendar, classes for the first semester will start in August instead of June, and the second semester will end in May.

Quiblat said that if classes will end in May instead of March, students will start their vacation during the onset of the rainy season.

For this year, Quiblat said a weak El Niño phenomenon may be expected to occur from June to August.

However, because of the unpredictable weather conditions nowadays, Quiblat said the schools that will implement the new academic calendar are not completely out of the woods.

He said that class suspensions may still be implemented as typhoons would often occur in the months of August to October.

“Even if they change the academic calendar, there are still possibilities that classes may be suspended as the country is expected to be visited by 18 to 20 typhoons per year,” Quiblat said.

There is a possibility, though, that this year is going to be an “inactive” year for typhoons based on the patterns that they monitor every year.

About 25 typhoons, including the Nov. 9 super typhoon Yolanda, hit the country last year.
