CEBU CITY -- Dancers from Bogo City, whose houses were destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) last November, said they offered their dance in the Sinulog sa Kabataan to the Sto. Niño.

Remedios Gido, 14, still found time to practice for Saturday's competition even if her family’s house lost its roof and walls to the typhoon.

They learned Sinulog steps while helping their families rebuild their homes.

“We tried our best to offer what we can to the Sto. Niño,” said 14-year-old Suzmitha Nguho. She said they only started practicing last December 2.

Choreographer Adonis “Dondon” Niñal said he had to simplify the steps for the dancers.

“Mangita mi pamaagi maka-practice bisan gamay budget (We found time to practice despite the lack of money),” said dancer Sheyne Aton, 14.

The dancers were all studying at Lapaz National High School.

Niñal said they relied on the P150,000 financial assistance from Sinulog Foundation, plus the help of Bogo Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr. and the teachers.

Niñal said the props and costumes that they used on Saturday were improvisations of last year’s materials.

The dancers said they wished to convey hope in their dance.

Niñal said the day after Yolanda, the sun rose and life continued in Bogo.

Bogo City was the only participant in Saturday's Sinulog sa Kabatan sa Lalawigan that had been heavily damaged by Yolanda. Four local government units joined the Sinulog sa Lalawigan high school category. Watch the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan replay.

The other three participants are from Danao, Naga and Tuburan town. See the list of winners. (OCP/Sun.Star Cebu)
