A FORMER village chief was found dead in a secluded area in the mountain barangay of Bulangsuran, Samboan, Cebu on Friday morning.

Edilberto Esparcia, 53, married, who once served as chief of Barangay Calatagan, Samboan, was discovered by authorities lying on the ground with his clothes and raincoat on.

PO1 Jason John Heramis of Samboan Police Station said Esparcia reportedly suffered a heart attack.

This is according to an examination conducted by municipal health personnel Freddie Dinopol and Charlene Hernandes.

Heramis, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said that Esparcia failed to go home since Jan. 9 and that prompted his family to look for him.

A certain Oliva Balbona called the police to report that Esparcia was located at 7:40 a.m. in Bulangsuran.

According to some residents, Esparcia was last seen with an unidentified woman on board his motorcycle.

He had worked as a motorcycle-for-hire driver after his stint as barangay captain.

A woman who was gathering firewood in the mountain barangay saw Esparcia at 3 p.m. when he passed by the area.

No foul play

Heramis said all of Esparcia’s belongings remained intact.

“So, there was no signs of foul play or a robbery,” he said.

Esparcia was rushed to MJ Cuenco Memorial Hospital in Malabuyoc town, but he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. John Bascuña.

Heramis said the victim’s family requested for an autopsy.

Insp. Carmechaelo Lesoy, the town police chief, said they are now looking for the woman to help them in the investigation.

“Amo ning gipalawman karon ang imbestigasyon para mahibaw-an kinsa ‘to siya ug maka-explain pud sa nahitabo (We are digging deeper in the investigation to identify the woman, and she can explain what happened,” he said.
