NINE residents of Barangay Malubog, Cebu City were bitten by a stray dog in just one day.

This prompted Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella to ask the City Government’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) to strictly implement the impounding of stray dogs in the city.

In an interview yesterday, Malubog Barangay Councilor Antonio Bolocano said the nine persons, all residents of Sitio Upper Malubog, were bitten by the stray dog last Dec. 31.

“Irong buang man gud to. Kutob sa tawo nga iyang makit-an, iyang paakon (The dog had gone wild and bit everyone in sight),” he said.

Bolocano said they were not able to identify the owner of the dog since it was just roaming around the streets in the mountain barangay.

Bitten by the dog are two four-year-old children, Niño Waga and Ashley Marie Mosua; two teenagers Melvin Arcillo, 14, and Ryan Arcayan, 16; and five adults, Edmund Jabadan, 22, Irene Belenia, 33, Norma Enocian, 42, Bernadette Enocian, 27, and a woman who asked not be named.

Residents killed the dog before it could bite more people. Its head was cut off and brought to the Department of Agriculture’s diagnostic laboratory for examination.

Yesterday, the nine victims went to City Hall to ask help from Labella for their anti-rabies injection.

Labella, in a separate interview, said the victims were already given anti-tetanus shot and “Verorab” vaccination for anti-rabies from the City Health Department (CHD) Labella said, though, that they still need “Fabirab” vaccination, also for anti-rabies, but the CHD doesn’t have its own supply of the medicine. Each shot costs P5,000.

Labella asked the Department of Health 7 to provide the victims with the vaccine for free.
