FIVE houses were razed by fire in Barangay Poblacion, Samboan last Wednesday, New Year's Day.
The fire also damaged one house and a pigpen owned by Daniel Briones. A mother pig and its 13 piglets were killed.
According to the investigation conducted by SFO2 Molilito Leceña, the fire reportedly started at the room rented by Eduard Tuazon inside the house of Pepe Dingal.
The wind fanned the flames, which quickly spread to the houses of Gaspar Llomente, Baltazar Dinauanao, Eliza Briones and Joseph Bayubay.
The house owned by Eliza is the ancestral house of the family of Dr. Wyben Briones, past president of the Cebu Medical Society (CMS) and chairperson of the Rotary International District 3860 dengue eradication project.
Based on the report by Leceña, the firefighters received the alarm at 1:30 p.m. The blaze was put out after two hours.
Leceña said faulty electrical connection may have caused the fire. He pegged the damage at P300,000.
He said no one was inside Tuazon’s room and the door was locked when the fire broke out.
Dingal was also not around having left for Pampanga to celebrate New Year's Day there.
Later in Cebu City, two houses were hit by fire in Pelaez Extension, Barangay Sta. Cruz.
FO3 Ramon Molina said they received the first alarm at 9:43 p.m.
The fire razed the house of Roger Orosa before it was placed under control 15 minutes later.
But four hours later, another fire hit the neighboring house owned by Japeth Cebrero.
At 2:14 a.m. yesterday, the firefighters prevented the flames to spread to other houses and buildings.
Both incidents are still under investigation, but Molina said in their initial assessment the fire may have been caused also by faulty wiring.
Molina said the fire damaged about P200,000 worth of property. No one was hurt in the Samboan and Cebu City fires.
