THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) extended the filing period of the certificate of candidacy (COC) for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections from three days to six days.

According to Comelec Resolution 9761, the filing is set on Oct. 11-17 instead of the earlier schedule, which was from Oct. 15 to 17. No filing of certificate of candidacies, however, is allowed on Oct. 13, a Sunday.

Provincial Elections Assistant Officer Arthur Patiga said an aspirant may file his/her
COC in the Comelec office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The resolution, which was promulgated on Aug. 23, stated there were numerous pleas from field offices to extend the period of the filing of COCs, citing that the three-day period is not enough to accommodate all the aspirants for the elections.

“Whereas, in view of the expanding interest to participate in the barangay and SK elections, it is likely that the number of aspirants for the positions will
significantly increase,” part of the resolution read.

The Comelec anticipated that the political aspirants will file toward the end of the filing period.

The Comelec said they cannot extend the filing of the COC beyond Oct. 17 because the following day is the start of the campaign period.

The campaign period for the barangay and SK election is on Oct. 18-26.

Like in previous elections, there will be no campaigning a day before the elections. A candidate is allowed to spend only P5 per registered voter since the Comelec does not allow political parties.

The candidates are also required to submit their statement of election contributions and expenditures 30 days after elections.
