THE outgoing and incoming mayors of Talisay City formally took their oaths of office for their new positions yesterday.

In a ceremony at 4 p.m., Talisay City mayor-elect Johnny “JVR” delos Reyes and fellow winning candidates under the Liberal Party took their oaths in front of Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.

Incumbent City Mayor Socrates Fernandez also took his oath with the LP officials.

Fernandez said his friendship with Delos Reyes and fellow LP candidates is beyond politics.

In his speech, Delos Reyes praised Fernandez for showing he is united with other city officials. Fernandez won as city councilor under the Alayon Party of Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, first district).

Along with Delos Reyes and Fernandez, Talisay City Vice Mayor-elect Romeo Villarante and city councilor-elects Danny Caballero and Valeriano Ylanan also took their oaths yesterday.

Councilor-elect Aldin Diaz was not present as he was still in Australia.

Fernandez said progress begins with both parties being united for the city.

He said he is friends with Delos Reyes and his fellow LP candidates and is willing to support the new administration.

Fernandez’s loyalty with the Alayon Party has been questioned after he attended a party organized by the LP Cebu Province earlier this month.

But Fernandez denied he is shifting alliances.

Cebu Provincial Election Supervisor Lionel Marco Castillano said the oath of office ceremony was legal.

Castillano said that based on election laws, the oath of office is required for an official before he can assume office.

An official is required to take his oath in front of an administering officer, such as the mayor, governor, vice governor, etc.

Held at the front of the New Talisay City Hall, the oath-taking ceremony was attended by more than 2,000 supporters.

Guests included families and friends of the candidates.

Delos Reyes and the newly elected officials will assume office on July 1.
