A KNIFE-WIELDING man used a nine-year-old girl in Barangay Suba, Cebu City at 8 p.m. last Wednesday, to shield himself from pursuers.

Joy (real name withheld) was rescued unscathed, but hostage-taker Polinario Nanoy, who is allegedly a drug addict, suffered injuries after he was beaten up by the angry residents.

Suba barangay tanod Armando Cabugason said the barangay hall received reports about a man, who was armed with a knife and reportedly went wild, inside a complex in Sitio Missionaries.

Cabugason said while he and his fellow tanods were heading toward the complex, they came across Nanoy with a knife in his hand.

A brief chase then ensued after Nanoy, who resides in the nearby sitio, panicked upon seeing the tanods and ran away.

While trying to escape, Nanoy bumped to four children, including Joy, who were playing.

Nanoy grabbed Joy and held the knife into the girl’s neck.

Nanoy allegedly threatened to kill Joy if the tanods would continue following him.

Joy’s mother, Mary, kept on crying while watching her daughter being hostaged by Nanoy.

She said she was doing some chores inside the house and allowed Joy to play outside when the incident happened.

Edgardo Tortor, 41, was inside his house when he heard of the commotion and saw Nanoy standing next to their gate pointing a knife to Joy.

Tortor said Joy is his seven-year-old son’s playmate and that upon seeing the child held hostage by Nanoy, he decided to save the child.

Nanoy did not notice Tortor, giving him the opportunity grab the knife from the suspect’s hand.

When the residents saw Tortor managed to hold Nanoy, they disarmed the suspect and started beating him up.

Tortor suffered a cut in his right hand after he accidentally held the blade of the knife when the residents surrounded him and Nanoy.

Junjun Garcia, one of the residents, grabbed Joy from Nanoy’s hold.

A team from the San Nicolas Police Station arrived and pacified the residents. The police brought Nanoy to the Cebu City Medical Center.

San Nicolas Police Station Chief Leonil Avergunzado said cases of child abuse and attempted murder will be filed against Nanoy for taking Joy hostage, while a case of physical injuries will also be filed against him because of the cut suffered by Tortor.

Nanoy is still confined at the city hospital as of yesterday.
