MANDAUE City officials want their constituents to proudly say, “I am Mandaue.”

As it kicked off its fiesta celebration last Saturday, the City Government launched the “I am Mandaue” movement with the aim of encouraging each resident to contribute to the city’s progress.

Roger Paller, the City’s public information officer, said the movement is in line with the City’s commitment to good governance.

It is part of the Performance Governance System (PGS), a good governance framework that the City implements with the help of the Institute for Solidarity Asia.

“This movement emphasizes values that every Mandauehanon should embrace, such as sense of pride,” Paller said in an interview.

City Administrator James Abadia, during the launch, emphasized the role of every constituent in building a “character city,” where residents practice good values and take pride in their socio-cultural heritage.

The launch was held at the Mandaue City Hall and was attended by city employees and officials led by Mayor Jonas Cortes. Candidates of the Miss Mandaue 2013 also graced the activity.

On a “Freedom Wall” they wrote their answers to the question: “If you were Mandaue, what characteristic or trait best describes you?”

“I am for good governance,” wrote Mayor Cortes.

Paller said the City will produce T-shirts with the phrase “I am Mandaue” emblazoned on them. The shirts will be worn by City Hall employees who completed PGS seminars.

“Our goal is to empower every Mandauehanon. The people have been used to wait for government officials to act on problems. We want a paradigm shift. We want participatory governance,” said Paller.

The launch was followed by a motorcade and a mass at the National Shrine of St. Joseph.

Nightly activities are held at the Heritage Plaza, located in front of City Hall. The fiesta celebration will culminate on May 8, the feast day of St. Joseph, the City’s patron saint.
