A MINIBUS lost its brakes and rammed into a parked truck in Liloan, Cebu yesterday afternoon, injuring its driver and nine passengers, including a 62-year-old woman who was pinned against the dashboard for 30 minutes.

The accident happened in Barangay Jubay around 12:30 p.m. The Mitsubishi minibus (GXT233) was bound for Carmen, Cebu, when it tried to overtake a multicab, said PO2 Rochelle Jugalbot of the Liloan Police Office.

When the multicab signaled to make a left turn toward the Liloan public market, the minibus swerved back to the right but lost its brakes. It crashed into the Isuzu boom truck (XBT179) parked on the side of the road.

Jacinta Abangan, 62, a resident of Taytay, Danao City, had to be removed from the front seat by personnel of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation.

Alejandro Morales, 57, the driver of the minibus and a resident of Cogon West, Carmen, complained of pain in his ribs after he hit the steering wheel.

Abangan, who suffered leg injuries, and Morales were brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, along with four other passengers who suffered minor cuts and body pains. The rest were taken by their relatives.

The boom truck, owned by a certain Corazon Santiago of Marilao, Bulacan, was parked on the roadside so the driver could change a flat tire. It was bound for Bantayan Island, Cebu and driven by a certain Ernesto Santos, 56. No one was on board the truck when it was hit by the minibus.

Jugalbot said the owner of the minibus, a certain Judy Capuno, and his wife went to the scene to check the condition of the driver and the passengers, who were already brought to the hospital when the couple arrived.

Last Jan. 16, a trailer truck rammed into a bus in Naga City, killing 11 passengers and injuring more than 50 others. Six days later, a man died while three others were injured after a sedan crashed into a passenger bus in Alcoy, Cebu.
