Designer denim

FEW fabrics offer as much versatility and comfort as denim. Evolving from its utilitarian beginnings as sturdy clothing for hard-labor workers, denim has become a wardrobe staple for all ages and all style inclinations. It is now made in different weights with endless possibilities for washes, colors, and cuts, and can be worn almost everywhere and to every occasion.

SM City Cebu put the spotlight on the much-loved material in its fourth run of Glitterati at the Northwing. Glitterati continued with its tradition of dressing Cebu’s top models in some of retail’s best-loved brands. This year’s show included the exciting twist of adding clothes by three of Cebu’s promising designers: Mike Yapching, Bree Esplanada and Exur Lopena.

As denim is favored for its comfort, Mike Yapching based his collection on the quality that the fabric is commonly associated with, to create pieces that were relaxed but modern. He incorporated subtle sportswear details to the pieces to make them wearable for both the streets and this casual fashion event.

Bree was inspired by grunge fashion for his denim designs. 90s grunge often meant plaid flannel, but Bree wanted to veer away from that. “In my head, I knew that the pieces had to be stylish, classy and sleek, but still make the personalities look like rock stars, hence the skull embroidery and sophisticated lining.”

With his minimalist collection, Exur hoped to “create basic yet dynamic pieces, pieces that are already in your wardrobe but with a twist, a cut, or a slash here and there; pieces that are familiar so that it makes sense, yet infused with an interestingly executed detail [to make it] new.” Exur worked with the theme that everyday is special, with an everyday material like denim and people that others can relate to. The designer explained that his collection is simple with an everyday feel, but still special and striking with interesting cuts. “Truly less is never a bore, less is always more,” Exur said.

Proving denim’s versatility again and again, the runway showed off look after unique look. The designers’ pieces were worn by some of Cebu’s young personalities, aged 14 to 20. These were Adrian Au, Joachim Go, Josie Gullas, Jennifer Kim, Iani Miranda, Alex Osmeña, Julia Kristiana Pastrano, Liana Annabella Pastrano, Alyssa Sacal, Xandro Selma, Maria Sofia Snare, Takeshi Suzuki, Christian Ugarte, Ysa Unchuan and Zarah Majam.
