FILMS. We witnessed the successful staging of the first Sinegugma Digital Short Film Competition last week at the social hall of Cebu City Hall although only four barangays submitted entries. As a start, it was good enough but we are hoping that more barangays would participate in next year’s competition. We commend Guadalupe, Sirao, Kinasang-an and Apas for their impressive short films. Although their creators and artists were neophytes, yet they were able to come up with delightful productions.

Promise. We are happy with the pronouncement made by Councilor Sisinio Andales that there will be a second Sinegugma Digital Film Competition next year. He chairs the Cebu City Youth Development Commission that is behind this youth-oriented contest. To us, this project should be sustained as a yearly competition in order to encourage the youth to venture into filmmaking and encourage them to hone their skill as filmmakers and artists.

Assistance. During the program, the city government gave a wheelchair and a cash assistance to Allan Jayme Rabaya in recognition of his contribution to Cebuano music and cinema. We agree with everybody’s observation that Rabaya had contributed a lot to the growth of the local music and cinema before his ailment. He wrote a number of award-winning songs and beautiful stageplays and directed some Cebuano digital movies.

Awarding. On Aug. 16 this year, the 14th edition of the Ten Outstanding Cebuanos Award (Toca) will be staged at the Sacred Heart Center on D. Jakosalem St.this city.

It will be the highlight of the 32nd anniversary of Tingog Sa Lungsod, the longest-running radio program in this part of the archipelago. Engr. Greg Senining, president of the Publishers’ Association of the Philippines, Inc. (Papi) Cebu, is the main anchor of this program that we hear every day, from 1-1:30 p.m., on Bantay Radyo.

Speaker. Papi national president Luis Arriola will be the keynote speaker during the awarding ceremony. Also supporting the upcoming Toca event are the Cebu Breakfast Club, Inc. and Cebu Association of Media Practitioners Inc. Next week, we shall reveal the names of the Toca awardees.
