CONCLUDING the inspiring “Clarissa” painting exhibit, the young artist’s mother and book author, Malu Tiongson-Ortiz, will have a parenting talk and book signing today, July 25, from 1-3 p.m. at The Gallery of Ayala Center Cebu in Cebu City.

At the special parenting lecture, Tiongson-Ortiz will talk about accepting and rearing a child with Down syndrome, overcoming financial difficulty in raising a child with special needs and exploring a child’s potential.

Her book, Embracing God’s Purpose for my Special Child, gives a positive perspective on responding to the reality of having a child with Down syndrome and affirming her as a special blessing from God.

In her book, Tiongson-Ortiz shares her journey, both joys and challenges, in having and raising her daughter, Clarissa.

“She was born with Down syndrome, hearing and speech impaired and physically disabled. But God is good; he gave her eyes to see colors and hands to paint,” she said of her daughter.

Special purpose

“God created Clarissa for a special purpose. While we teach her the A-B-Cs and 1-2-3s, she teaches us the greater things in life–unconditional love, patience, perseverance, contentment and simplicity,” she added.

Mary Lorraine Tiongson-Ortiz, better known to her family and friends as Malu, is a wife and a mother of three.

A fine arts graduate majoring in interior Design, she took her career to a partial rest to take care of Clarissa and do ministry for people affected by disability.

Currently the vice president of the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (Dsapi), Tiongson-Ortiz continues to move others by being a spiritual counselor and inspirational speaker.

Her second book, Ikaw Na Ang Maganda! How to be Beautiful Inside and Out, will be released this September at the Manila International Bookfair.
