CEBU CITY — The laid-back radio hit that charmed its way into the Cebuano hearts, has also marked an appeal to Filipino nationwide.
Visayan Pop (VisPop) Songwriting Campaign’s third placer Balay ni Mayang bagged the Regional Song of the Year Award during the MOR Pinoy Music Awards held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila last July 11.
In celebration of its first anniversary, My Only Radio (MOR) 101.9 For Life! presents MOR Pinoy Music Awards, an event to celebrate and honor the greatness of original Pinoy music (OPM) and Filipino musicians.
The top-charting song written by Kyle Wong of the Wonggoys and Marianne Dungog (aka Mayang) got its inspiration for the composition from Kyle’s visits to Mayang’s house.
The song is sung by Kyle Wong and Martina San Diego. For the “Regional Song of the Year” Award, Balay ni Mayang battled against two other regional song nominees: Paglaum by Marjun Taroy and Dili Tanan by Rommel Tuico.
“It feels surreal knowing that the song made it that far. I still couldn’t believe that a song so simple could be appreciated by a lot of people not only Cebuanos but from other regions as well,” Mayang said.
When asked of her message to aspiring Visayan talents, Mayang suggests to continue supporting local music.
“Let us show the other side of the Visayan music scene, we are not just all about novelty and bisrock. Let us showcase the new generation of Visayan artistry,” Mayang said. (Denice Dabon, STC Mass Com Intern)
