STARTING last Tuesday, July 1, or even earlier, the City of Carcar had already been abuzz with activity. It will be celebrating its seventh charter day as a city on Monday, July 7.

As expected in events like this, a bevy of activities were lined up just to make the occasion really special and memorable. It is worthwhile to note that religious activities are incorporated in the line-up, most significantly on the first and last days.

Of course, in between serious and solemn activities, there are things that lighten up the mood. Today, potential singers will vie for the Carcar Idol title which carries with it sizeable prizes.

An exhibition game in basketball and a cultural program await expectant spectators tomorrow. Most probably, a cultural presentation is what the education sector has prepared.

The next day, different festivals will take centerstage. On the charter day itself, the city’s digital tourism will be launched. The local government unit has prepared something spectacular for the night it has sponsored.

Multi-colored and glittering fireworks will light up the late evening sky of the city to mark the culmination of the week-long celebration.

Gov. Hilario “Junjun” Davide III will report to the people of the province of Cebu on Monday what his administration has done in the past one year since he assumed office as the premier province’s chief executive.

His Report to the People (he prefers to call it this way rather than the usual State of the Province Address) is scheduled at 2 p.m.

The issue on the country’s one and only superstar Nora Aunor’s being deprived of the honor of being declared national artist refuses to die and seems to have been raised to a higher level.

The superstar herself has spoken and expressed her gratitude to fellow artists, national artist awardees, ordinary citizens and netizens both her fans and otherwise in and out of the country who rallied behind her.

She was wearing a T-shirt purportedly given by fellow artist Gardo Verzosa. The T-
shirt was emblazoned with “Proud To Be Filipino / Ashamed of My Government.”

It was obvious that PNoy was misinformed when he came out with the statement, saying that his decision to drop Nora was based on her “conviction” in the US for possession of illegal drugs. This was vehemently denied by Nora’s US-based lawyer and those in the know, adding that the case was dismissed.

Whoever furnished the president with the erroneous information is equally responsible for adding fuel to the fire. So what will happen next?

Will PNoy admit that he committed a mistake? Will he humble himself and rectify that mistake by declaring Nora a National Artist as expected by many, if at all possible? Will Nora make another history, if ever? Keep a close watch.

I can imagine the height of excitement and anticipation of the fans of today’s most popular young love team Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla at the announcement issued by Star Cinema through promo diva Josie Pereyra that the two will be in Cebu (specifically SM City Cebu) on July 14 to promote their latest film, She’s Dating The Gangster).

The visit is actually two days prior to the opening of the film (July 16) in movie houses nationwide. Another project will vie for the honor of being this year’s top grosser, which is currently held by still another Star Cinema project, Starting Over Again. This film is top-billed by Toni Gonzaga, Piolo Pascual and Iza Calzado.

Will it dislodge the latter and relegate it to second place? We’ll find out. In the meantime, endure the high decibel shrieks and screams from the love team’s diehard fans when you happen to be in the venue when they appear onstage or even find out for yourself what makes the two the hottest properties today by watching the movie yourselves.
