From season to season

THE weather has been somewhat temperamental as the seasons turn, bringing sunshine on some days and downpours on others. These pieces by young designer Mia Arcenas strike the right balance between seasons of sun or rain, in shades of orchid associated with warm weather, and rose associated with cooler climes.

Mia’s signature kaftans are quickly snapped up from the racks as her most popular items ever since she started her line. A few designs for the current season are still available on her website, including this beautiful floor-length version. Its Sabrina neckline and shorter sleeves give it a dressier shape. The less billowy fit hangs loosely on the body, but is still roomy enough to perhaps cinch at the waist with a belt. Instead of using materials like chiffon or linen that would make a kaftan best as a cover-up, this one is crafted from pure silk.

The soft floral print against an orchid-hued background add to the versatility of a piece that can easily transition from day to night, from seaside to city.

Another floor-length design in rich purple combines a mini dress with a sheer overlay.

Delicate straps and a plunging back are revealing, but the long silk chiffon still leaves something to the imagination. This dress is styled with a neckpiece turned around to highlight the back, with printed silk and gold wire shaped into flowers to create a dramatic accessory and add a little weight to the airy feel of the dress.

The designer drew inspiration from the ‘50s for some of the pieces in her current collection, as with a pink dress that is fitted at the waist and with a circle skirt shape popular in that decade. Thin straps, a princess-cut neckline and a corseted bodice are flattering on nearly every body type, as Mia designs her pieces to be as wearable as possible. Flower appliques on the bodice and skirt add some detail to this cotton candy pink frock.

For a pink dress that isn’t quite so sweet, a rose-colored dress that hugs the body is an option perfect for cocktails or late nights out. The sweetness of a princess neckline is contrasted by sheer long sleeves and a high slit up one thigh. Done in one hue, this dress makes enough of a statement on its own, but also acts as a perfect backdrop for gobs of pearls or other statement jewelry.

In a palette of rose, pink and purple, these statement pieces stand out whether against cheery yellow sunlight or moody gray rain.
