‘The Word’ in a creative perspective

IN THE beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

AS a modern response to the invitation of Italian political philosopher Giambattista Vico (born 1668) to listen to The Divine—by bringing the contrivances of life to attention—is a local exhibit inspired by the eschatological performance of Christ on the cross.

Opening simultaneously with Cebu’s eighth Gabii sa Kabilin last May 30, “Logos” is a display of creative interpretation of Christ’s death as visually portrayed by the exhibiting artists Soika, Zaldy Ramos and Rv Sanchez. The three are fresh graduates of the fine arts program of the University of San Carlos.


As how curator Nomar Bayog Miano described it, just like what Christ did on the cross, “Logos” is an eponymous show ripe with revelations. Logos is Greek for “the word.” The exhibit features a total of 11 substantive pieces including installations and murals.

“Christ is logos incarnate; logos personified in love. He is ‘The Word’ made flesh (and dwelt among us). He died on the cross to save us from our sins. These revelations bring meaning and form to His grand act at the cross,” Miano said on the rationale of the exhibit.

The diversity of translations of “The Word” led to the play of concepts emphasized at the exhibit.

“Christ is an eye-opener for the people. What he did revealed a lot of significant matters to us, most especially about the real meaning of love,” was Soika’s understanding of “The Word.”

Soika’s works depict the impact of the abuse of power executed by colonialists and imperialists to their underdogs. The dominance of neon colors in his entries symbolizes the process of mind control or supremacy.

A string of unanswered questions and riddles in the society such as poverty and addiction (drugs, alcohol) surface in the creations of Zaldy Ramos.

“Ngano naay ingon ani nga panghitabo? Ngano ning-exist sila? Ngano?” a cloud of queries circulate in the head of the young artist.

To realize the concept of the filthy truth among humans, RV Sanchez, in his resourcefulness, represents the current situation of humanity in the material world by working around the possibilities of fly trap papers. That people are obsessed with secular happiness is the message read from his art. The flies symbolize humanity; the fly trap is the world.

“Logos” is positioned as another progress to the volume of the voice of the new flock of artists in a scene of traditional or conservative and Martino Abellana-influenced art. Soika, for one, expressed confidence on the growth of Cebu’s art as more contemporary players are on the move for the evolution of the sector.

The exhibit is housed for two weeks at the Alternative Contemporary Art Studio in Sacred Heart Parish in Cebu City.
