A SUMMER soiree at sunset was what the Cebu City Marriott Hotel held to honor their Marriott Rewards members who have reached the gold and platinum status, for their frequent stays in Marriott properties worldwide.

What better venue than the hotel poolside at twilight! This monthly event is also known as the GM (general manager’s) cocktails, and was presided by its GM Patrick Carroll, who saw to every culinary detail! No wonder the chef’s sumptuous dinner barbecue was at the peak of perfection! Incidentally, the Marriott Rewards Loyalty program allows its members special treatment such as complimentary upgrade, free internet, late check-out, lounge access, free breakfast, etc.

At the rate The Qube Gallery is churning out artists and artworks, Cebuanos will have no more reason to be remiss in cultural events. Recently, the gallery featured the masterpieces of internationally acclaimed artist Dominic Rubio, entitled “La Familia Cebuana,” his first solo exhibit.

Only in his early 40s, the talented Rubio’s works focus on colonial grandeur. In this exhibit, he plays the chronicler and showcases a collection immortalizing a number of Cebuano heritage spots with his “people types” portraying practices and tradition.

A graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas College of Fine Arts, Rubio has been painting for over two decades now and is considered a master of the neo-genre style.

He continues to evoke nostalgia and whimsy in his paintings, with a distinct Filipiniana motif.

Feeling a sense of accomplishment was gallery owner Maris Holopainen who was delighted at the interesting turn-out of local art collectors and enthusiasts who appreciated the characteristic style of Rubio’s brilliantly hued clothes that serve as mirrors of the society of a given era. Kudos to Maris. The more, the better for Cebuanos?
