The art of motherhood-A A +A

“IT'S these little moments that matter. It’s these moments that we remember,” Paulina Constancia on the shared moments between mother and child.
For its Philippine stop, the non-selling, traveling art show of the Filipino-Canadian artist (and poet), aptly entitled “Moments of Motherhood (Mom),” opened last May 17 at the West Gorodo Hotel in Cebu City. It is the home of the Paulina Constancia Museum of Naive Art (Mona). Prior to its arrival in the country, “Mom” had been exhibited in Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore (where Constancia is now based with her husband and four-year-old son).
“Mom,” which runs until June 17, is presented by Mona as a kick off activity to the second Kabilin Fest. With this festival, Mona, in partnership with various creative practitioners in the community, gives the Cebuano public the opportunity to experience a myriad of interactive cultural heritage workshops under one roof.
Also curated as a post-Mother’s Day celebration, “Mom” is an animated, playful fare of 15 items in mixed media, symbolizing a collection of those little colorful moments of motherhood as experienced by Constancia herself. She was 39 when she became a mother.
The “Mom” set was done in three months time. Acrylic and scrap fabric donated by a quilter friend of Paulina Constancia make up most of the pieces. As an active advocate of the welfare of women and children and West Gorodo Hotel’s cultural stewardship program, Paulina Constancia pegged her art to be of greater service to the society, revealing her natural ability as a communicator.
“My art is just a little voice, a little joy and a little hope, but I wish to make a little difference in the world,” the homegrown artist said.
Not only as an expression of “thank you,” most importantly, “Mom” aims to highlight and promote the dignity of mothers and motherly individuals in general.
“Motherhood is a topic that is not really prioritized in the art scene. Mom is simply a tribute,” the painter said, smiling.
