Utzurrum: By leaps and bounds-A A +A

EXPANDING by leaps and bounds is the lively art scene in Cebu, what with the regular art shows, photo exhibits and the like, featuring classicists to abstractionists, amateur as well as professional photographers. We refer to Qube Gallery at The Persimmon in Mabolo, and branch No. 2 at The Henry Hotel in Banilad.
Very recently, the gallery embarked on a bold step by presenting the works of Italian-Venezuelan photographer, Jose Antonio Nigro, entitled “Tales from Our Skin,” an artistic, or should we say, adventurous foray into the shape of the male torso, couples and tattoo art, stemming from his adoration of the human body.
A graphic design graduate from Centro Artistico Villasmil de Leon in Caracas, Venezuela, Nigro has participated in several photography contests in the United States, Venezuela, Mexico, South Korea and Singapore. His participation in group exhibitions across Asia, has enabled him to hone his strong passion for documentary photography, pushing himself to break boundaries to capture the beauty, significance, and spontaneity of an image.
The guest list swelled on opening day, probably expecting a “bolder” collection, but the images as well as the execution, were shot impeccably and artistically, with the eyes and skill of a gifted master.
We doff our hats to the Qube Gallery owners, Jon Gotiong and Maris Holopainen, for making waves in our local art scene!
Guess who dropped by from Bamberg, Germany?
On his way to still another trade and fashion accessories show, entrepreneur/exporter and Bamberg-born Karlheinz Fehringer took time to have lunch with good friends, Terry Manguerra and this columnist.
Karl, whose global business interests, take him to the world’s fashion capitals, has an office in Cebu, manned by Terry’s son, Paolo.
Karl’s uncle, Erich, who is happily retired, from work in Bamberg, was on his way to Bangkok, where he escapes the harsh winters in Germany, and decided to visit his nephew in Cebu.
This certainly called for a reunion of sorts, over lunch at the Casino Español specially since this writer, had spent a week in picturesque Bamberg as a houseguest of the Fehringers, way back in the 80s.
