Smart sustains support for Earth Hour campaign-A A +A

SMART Communications Inc. (Smart) joined the country and the rest of the world in observing Earth Hour as part of a global commitment to help mitigate the impact of climate change.
Twenty-two of Smart’s facilities from across the country, including the corporate headquarters along Ayala Ave. in the Makati business district, participated in the one-hour switch-off as part of the Earth Hour activities.
“Smart has been a strong advocate of going green for the environment and we have been working at integrating eco-friendly measures in our operations. We’ve been participating in this annual switch-off campaign for Earth Hour for several years now to help spread awareness on this pro-environment movement,” said Ramon R. Isberto, Smart Public Affairs head.
Apart from supporting Earth Hour, Smart has been consistently engaging its employees and millions of subscribers to take a more proactive stance in helping protect the planet beyond the annual switch-off campaign.
Smart mounted an internal campaign for employees to come up with a community initiative that is environmentally and ecologically friendly.
Employees with the best proposals were given limited edition Earth Hour shirts.
“Mobilizing people to make a stand against global warming is a worthy undertaking. Taking care of the planet is everyone’s responsibility. We’re starting with sharing this advocacy with our employees and customers,” said Isberto.
Smart also supported Earth Hour activities in other parts of the country, like in the cities of Cebu and Cagayan de Oro.
Earth Hour, the annual worldwide campaign organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), known for enjoining households and businesses to switch-off non-essential lights for an hour in order to raise awareness on the need to take action on the increasingly pressing problem of climate change.
This year, WWF-Philippines launched Earth Hour Blue to support the rebuilding efforts of fishing communities in the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda as part of the reinvention of Earth Hour from being just a global voluntary action for the environment into a crowd-funding platform for environmental initiatives.
One of the key pillars of Smart’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) is environment conservation and protection. Mindful of its carbon footprint as a technology company, Smart has integrated into its business operations eco-friendly measures to help mitigate its impact on the environment.
One of these is the Green Merchandising Program, which involves the use of eco-friendly materials for outdoor and in-store advertising and merchandising. It has been shortlisted by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Corporate Sustainability Awards 2014.
