TRAVELLING is a choice. The destination is one thing. A place to stay is another. If you get “lost” in transit somewhere along the constraints of a budget while heading to the Queen City of the South, find comfort at Balay Bakasyunan, a boutique hostel tucked in Gemsville Subdivision in Lahug, Cebu City.

From the fresh interiors to the familiar caress of the pillows on the bunk beds, the countryside abode has a touch of vintage details and exudes a quaint atmosphere in all corners, shielding every weary backpacker from the noise of the city outside.

Owners Blanche Braun and Pia Marie Go wanted to project a lodging place in Cebu inspired by the aura of Sonya’s Garden in Tagaytay.

The happy feel of the drapery does all the welcome, while the secret patio at the back leads guests to a cozy siesta. The pantry is all yours and the lobby? Ah, inviting you for a good read on the couch. The frames nailed on the walls and the artsy décors at the receiving nook were mostly created from recycled materials.

“Junk to punk style,” as the creative mind behind the design, Jul Oliva, put it.

Balay Bakasyunan offers a total of five air-conditioned rooms—two private rooms for two and four, and three separate dormitories for six females, eight males and eight mixed lodgers. Extra beds may be allowed in some rooms depending on space. Personal lockers, bed linens, hot and cold showers and toiletry items are also available.

The house caters to both short- and long-term transients. The latter is offered on discount. Individual travelers from Manila, Laguna and Leyte have visited so far since it opened its doors sometime January this year.

So, if you’re hitting down south on a budget and don’t know where you’re going to rest a night or two, Balay Bakasyunan invites you for a stop. Check-in time is from 2 p.m. onwards while check-out is at 12 noon. Introductory rates include light breakfast.

They have Wi-Fi, too!
