HOW and where do you start to celebrate the red-letter day of a respected, revered and remarkable 95-year-old lady physician who has dedicated her entire life to her chosen profession?

Dr. Suga Sotto-Yuvienco was the focus of all eyes when she made her grand entrance at the Manila Room of Marco Polo Plaza Hotel recently.

The party theme was aptly called “Milestones With Music,” and featured the Cebu Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (I believe it was a 20-piece orchestra) that played hauntingly beautiful and rhythmically impeccable tunes from yesteryears, that immediately set the mood for the affair.

Predominant colors were pink, silver and black, indeed dramatic but dainty, as well.

They were splashed on stage through balloons and glitters that spelled “Suga at 95.”

Even the birthday cake, also done in pink, was a pastry masterpiece by the popular Marissa Unchuan.

What made the event most memorable for Suga was the presence of her sons, all based abroad, but who made the extra effort to be here except for one, who unfortunately couldn’t make it. Only girl Minnie is Cebu-based, and she was the brilliant Think Tank of the themed dinner. By the way, it was superbly prepared by the hotel. Including the unique Wine Parade, for the toast.

Whether she is Nanay, as she is fondly called by her family, or Tita Bebe, as her nephews endearingly refer to her, Dr. Suga, a dedicated obstetrician and gynecologist, remains to be a sister Zontian to her fellow members at the Zonta Club of Cebu 1. She was once its charter president and club founder. On the subject of clubs, she was also instrumental in the organization and growth of the Cebu Maternity House and the active Cebu Women’s Club that manages it.

And as if these were not enough, the good doctor was also involved in the Cebu Medical Society, and put heart and soul as a Rotary Ann (spouse) in the Rotary Club of Cebu, a socio-civic service club, of which her husband, Dr. Merito Yuvienco, was also a member.

On this auspicious occasion then, we would like to pay our own tribute and wish many more years to this woman for others, and a doctor to all!
