Sira-sira store: Cool summer

-A A +A

THE only thing cool about summer is the pool, which rhymes with the blistering hot time of the year. But, hey, I am no kill joy and I still think summer is cool and I still like the word cool.

It’s the all-around word to use when we want to mean neat, awesome or swell. It does not age, therefore it does not go out of style. A house can be cool as well as a sports car. A great guy like me is cool, but that is an uncool statement and I am just kidding about being cool.

Summer is cool as it offers a break from school (rhymes with cool). For working guys like me, summer is an excuse to go to the beach every Saturday and go out with friends on Sunday to test new resto-bars and revisit favorite ones.

Since too much chit chat is not cool, let me take the hint from my aunt, Tita Blitte, and nieces Joy and Krystal that I should expound on how to keep cool in summer.

I know a good idea when I see one and who am I to turn down the request? It makes my writing easier to boot.

After a little experiment and some tweaking of old recipes, I came up with coolers that are sure to make you grin like a Cheshire cat.

Ice baby. People drop ice on their drink to fight the heat of summer. Why don’t you upgrade the idea?

For fruit juices, slice your favorite fruit into tiny cubes and place in the ice tray.

Add water and freeze. When it is ready, you can use it like regular ice to chill your drink.

Good combinations include pineapple bits to go with orange juice; apple bits for pineapple; grape bits for grape juice; a combination of fruits for any juice you like.

Another good way to make cool ice (pun is not intended) is to crush choco cookies (oops, not too much; you want it a bit rough). Place in the ice tray and pour in milk, then freeze. You can use this to chill your choco drink. You can also use chocolate drink to freeze with the cookies and use it to cool milk. Or maybe you can freeze crushed strawberries and either add milk or water. When ready, use to cool strawberry-milk drink.

Big guys and girls can benefit from this idea. To give your rum and cola more zing, freeze lemon juice and use like regular ice.

Preppy pops. You can make nutritious popsicles by simply freezing fruit juice or healthy drink you make at home: orange, pineapple, chocolate. To add interest, include fruit bits or crushed cookies.

Healthy drinks. Make slush at home by combining fruit vegetables with sweet, ripe fruits. A good combination would be peeled cucumber with pineapple. Blend in a mixer with ice. Don’t sweeten but if you must, use honey. Other great combinations include apple with orange, strawberry with apple, watermelon with strawberry or whatever you want to have in your glass.

Cold salad. Why not freeze fruit salad in an ice tray. The cute little servings will delight the kids.

Make ice cream cake by spreading ice cream on a piece of Graham cracker and top with another cracker, then freeze.

To add twist to well-chilled macaroni salad, serve it in a lettuce cup.

If these don’t make you feel cool, I don’t know what will.
