Oscars beauty trend: nude lips-A A +A
Thursday, March 20, 2014
IF YOU'LL take a look at different makeup styles that the stars wear to red carpet events, there tends to be one or two trends that will stand out.
Previously, it was burgundy lipstick and/or retro waves. It seems more of the celebrities went for a less made-up look during this year’s Academy Awards. Looking at the photos, most of the actresses relied on softer hair and super-full lashes, choosing to go pretty light on the brows.
Did anyone else notice, in particular, that nearly all of the actresses who were on the red carpet were wearing nude lipstick?
I actually find nude lips more difficult to wear than red lipstick—go a shade too light, and you’ll end up looking washed out. But as you can see here, it can also look so pretty and “not trying too hard” when done right, and you don’t have to pair nude lips with a smokey eye all the time. I’m taking a cue from these celebrity looks next time I experiment with a nude lip.
Jada Pinkett Smith
Mrs. Will Smith’s nude lip had a slightly pinky tone and looked to be topped off with gloss that has gold shimmer in it. She paired it with warm-toned pink eyeshadow and defined her crease with a warm brown, keeping the brown shadow lifted instead of going down to the outer corner of the eyes. Sort of “winging” your crease color like this helps eyes look more lifted. Jada lined both her upper and lower lash lines with black, and added a dusty rose blush to the apples of her cheeks.
Olivia chose to make her striking eyes the center of attention, with her very slightly pink lips almost totally matted out. She had on thick black winged eyeliner only on the upper lids, which picked up the black of her dress. She appears to have individual false lashes on, instead of a full strip that is the same length all throughout.
An interesting touch was white eyeliner on the outsides of the wing, which may have been intentional to complement her white dangling earrings.
An updo with waves and loose tendrils kept the look less severe than a slicked-back updo or super-straight locks.
The Gravity star went the rather more traditional route with nude lips, pairing hers with a smokey eye. What makes it look fresh is that she used more browns than black, and had navy liner on her waterline to match the navy of her dress. She emphasized her eyes with long lashes and mascara on her bottom lashes as well.
This year’s Best Actress went for a youthful look with a super radiant complexion, black mascara, peach-pink blush, and a creamy nude pink lipstick.
Choosing creamier formulas helps skin look younger and more supple; super-matte formulas may define creases or make skin look dull.
