DEAR Cindy,

Come school opening I’ll be a freshman in high school. Our graduation day is past approaching and still my grades are low. But then I realize that my problem is I goof off too much. I hang out with my friends all day long and don’t like to study at all.

I really want to change and study better. My parents are always too busy. They don’t have time for me. I also have this bad habit of wanting new clothes and shoes. When I don’t get them, I throw a tantrum. I hate being this way.

Please help and tell me how I can change my ways so that I’ll be a better student.

Dear Olsen,

Do you goof off because you aren’t interested in learning or is this your way of getting even with your parents for being too busy for you? If you want your parents to spend more time with you, let them know directly. Tell them that you need them to be there for you.

You can also do a lot to help yourself. Begin by observing how you study. We all think and learn differently. Are you more perceptive when you read or when you listen to a lecture? Do you absorb knowledge better on your own or when you study with a group? Is your mind more alert in the morning or at night?

These are the things that you should consider. Find a place in your house where your concentration is more focused. Go with what works for you. Personally, I need to goof off a little before I can concentrate on my work.

Olsen, throwing temper tantrums may be effective with your parents, but it sure won’t make you popular with your peers. The trick to changing is to be conscious of your thought processes (observe the triggering situations) that lead up to the tantrums. This way you can catch and control yourself before you explode.

Because you are undoing a habit, it may take many attempts before you see improvement. Remember to be gentle with yourself. Change wouldn’t happen overnight, but it will happen when you put your heart and mind to it. At least deciding to change to stop being a brat means you’re halfway over the hurdle towards your goal. It is not part of our Heavenly Father’s plan that a single one of His little ones that’s you and I, to go astray. He loves us all.

God bless,
