DEAR Dr. Dana,

I have learned so many things from you and these lessons have become useful in my daily life. I’m only 22 but the veins in my hands and my fingers are obvious. They are like varicose veins. They are so unsightly.

That’s why I feel so insecure and experience self-pity. Sometimes when I’m invited to big parties, social gatherings and one-on-one interviews, I really refuse to attend because of my hands. This is also the reason why up to now I haven’t landed a job since I graduated last year.

Please, doc, what must I do? I tried to apply some creams, but the veins look just the same. One thing also is that I have sensitive skin, I’d like to know what are the best diet to have so that my skin will be free from acne, skin blemishes and infections. God bless you and more power.

Dear Anne,

Thank you for your support to Women’s World. Anne, there is no perfect human being in this whole wide world. Some have physical defects that render them invalid or incapacitated for life because of aberrations, deformities and congenital abnormalities. Some people may be born with extra super fine skin such that the veins and arteries become prominent and unsightly.

So you see, we have to accept the reality of ourselves; that each one of us is unique and special in his/her own way. The thing to do is to be positive. Avoid concentrating on the negative aspect of the varicose-looking aspect of your hands. You should thank God for those two hands that enable you to do whatever you like. Just think of those who don’t have any.
Do you recall an anecdote of a boy crying because he had no shoes to wear until he saw one who had no feet at all? You know when I read your sad letter, that anecdote came to my mind right away. May be the prominent veins in your hands are the results of your being industrious. So, instead of hiding yourself from people, why not show them a pair of hard-working hands. The Lord, in His wisdom, will see it fit that you land a job if you just go out and apply.

Anne, fine skin like yours ought to feel smooth too. To do this be lavish with your hand cream; apply often to keep its moisture. Keep an ample supply wherever you go. Supplement your diet by taking Vitamins A, C. and E. These are good for the skin not only on the hand but for the entire body as well.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Dana R. Sesante
