Spring 2014 beauty trends: Part 1

-A A +A

Thursday, February 27, 2014

SOME parts of the world are still easing out of winter, but spring is already on most people’s minds. Again, although we don’t have four seasons here, fashion and makeup trends influence styles worldwide. Some of these makeup looks may already be familiar, but that’s how trends are, really: They come, they go, and sometimes they come back again.

Here are some of the eye makeup looks that kept popping up on the couture runways, and the most current ways to wear them.

Black Eyeliner

No “eureka” moment here since black eyeliner is forever in style. While the winged eyeliner from last season continues to be trendy, a more rebellious, less classic look is popular for spring. This is a relief for us who aren’t masters of liquid liner!

Apply and smudge as much black pencil or kohl liner as you want on your top and bottom lids. To make this look work, make sure your under eyes don’t look tired. Dark circles paired with this much eyeliner will make you seem like you had a very bad night.

I also recommend applying mascara to give your eyes some lift. At least we have a great excuse to say we are totally on-trend in case our black eyeliner starts to melt throughout the day.

White Shadow and Liner

On the other side of the color spectrum, and a little less expected, is white on the eyes. You can try different finishes, but I think white matte eyeshadow on its own is a little too stark.

Try iridescent white eyeshadow for all over the lids, or blend a white pencil on the inner corners of the eyes to instantly make you look more wide-eyed and awake. Pair this look with curled lashes and lots of black or brown mascara.

Pastel Eyeshadow

Pink, lavender, lime green and fruity-looking shades are certainly very springy. The new way to wear them is just as a soft wash all over the lids, and up to the brow bone, if you dare. Use a fluffier brush instead of a dense one to apply and blend color.

Strong Blue Eyes

For a bolder look, try cobalt blue or sapphire blue eyeshadow all over the lids and just above the crease, and blend the edges well. Not quite so daring, but still want to try this look? Try a thick line in this color on top lids.

Check back next week for Part 2 of the season’s makeup and beauty trends.
